Sunflowers

Eugène sometimes went for walks on a leash, and he was occasionally allowed to go outside under supervision. The kittens, Edmée and Ramen, were starting to be allowed to go with him so long as they wore their vests; Ramen's was orange and Edmée's was hot pink.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, and Yeyette, Sören, Anthony and DeKalb were playing Clue out on the back porch while keeping an eye on the cats in the grass some meters away. Eugène and the kittens were making motions like they were burying something, and at first that wasn't particularly noteworthy - they were probably doing their business outside, it seemed - but then it kept happening. Anthony made a confused noise and everyone looked up to see a wheelbarrow moving by itself in the grass, with small packages of seeds rising out of the wheelbarrow and floating in the air - and Eugène and the kittens were digging holes, using the Force to sprinkle the seeds into the dirt, and burying the seeds.

Eugène jumped in front of the hole he'd just dug up as Yeyette approached with the other humans. "Merde, it was supposed to be a surprise, Maman! You were distracted with the game!"

"It's not exactly a surprise if the wheelbarrow is wheeling itself, you know." Yeyette folded her arms, but she was smirking instead of glaring.

"I wanted to make you a garden for Mother's Day tomorrow," Eugène explained.

"We're planting sunf'owers," Ramen added.

"I know it would take at least a month or two to bloom, but I thought you would like it." Eugène cocked his head to one side and trilled.

"Oh, what a sweet boy." Yeyette came closer, held out her arms, and Eugène hopped up into them, purring. He accepted pets and skritches from the men, and kisses from his mother. Edmée and Ramen both climbed onto DeKalb, who chuckled as Edmée began to groom his eyebrows.

"And very hard-working," DeKalb said, who now had two sets of sandpaper tongues cleaning his nose. Anthony gave a sympathetic smile.

"Digging is much exercise, and I am famished," Eugène said, and put a paw to his forehead with an exaggerated sigh.

"Me too!" Edmée's tail swished.

"Well, let's see about getting you kids a snack," DeKalb said. He handed Edmée to Anthony and carried Ramen inside.

Sören walked alongside Yeyette and Anthony, and Sören gave Eugène a look and wagged his finger. "We don't want you overdoing it, little guy."

"Oui, Monsieur Doctor," Eugène said, and stuck his tongue out.

Sören paused to pluck a dandelion puff that caught his eye. Yeyette moved a few paces away, knowing what was coming, and Sören said, "Make a wish, everyone." He blew and scattered the fluff with his breath.

"I wish for food," Edmée said; Ramen nodded and meowed his agreement.

Eugène closed his eyes. "I wish for... a tractor."

The unmanned tractor had rolled all the way from Russia to Ukraine - it was necessary to escape after running over the evil bald Putin man. Now he was heading towards the Polish border. There was the sound of shelling, but the tractor was unafraid. He played his song louder, to boost the morale of the Ukrainian defenders.

"A my nashu slavnu Ukrayinu, hej-hej, rozveselymo!
A my tuju červonu kalynu pidijmemo,
A my našu Slavnu Ukrajinu, hej-hej, rozveselymo!"

A pair of middle-aged cats, brother and sister, who had been orphaned by the shelling - a grey ticked tabby named Samiilo and his sister Myroslava, a brown striped tabby - ran out from where they were hiding by a burned Russian tank, and hopped on the tractor as it passed by. They huddled up together, afraid of leaving, but even more afraid to stay behind in the city.

"I hate you," Myroslava screeched at the Russian troops in the distance. "You killed Mama and Tato! I hope you orcs die!"

"Go fuck yourselves!" Samiilo snarled at them, putting up his middle claw. Then he turned around and farted in their general direction.

The tractor beeped as if to express approval of that sentiment. And the tractor rolled on, the cats riding along to Poland... and perhaps beyond.
